Australia is a continent rich in history, cultural diversity and unique habitats. The Perth Mint is pleased to announce the second designs of the series aptly titled, The Land Down Under. Showcasing aspects of Australia's ancient culture, its discovery, enviable lifestyle and iconic landmarks, this is the Mint's prestigious collector series for 2013.
The iconic didgeridoo is featured on the second 1oz silver and 1/4oz gold releases. The didgeridoo is a wind instrument sometimes described as a wooden trumpet or pipe. It was first used by Indigenous Australians in ancient times, although the exact age of the instrument is not documented. Modern didgeridoos are usually cylindrical or conical, and generally, the longer the instrument, the lower the pitch or key.
