The Australian Nugget

The Australian Gold Nugget is a gold bullion coin minted by the Perth Mint. The series was introduced in 1986 by the Gold Corporation. These coins feature a unique "two-tone" frosted design effect which were unusual for a standard bullion coin, giving the Nugget a unique market niche.

From 1986 to 1989, the reverse of these coins pictured various Australian gold nuggets. With the 1989 proof edition, the design was changed to feature different Kangaroos. The coins are sometimes referred to as "gold kangaroos".

The Obverse

The coin's obverse features the third effigy of Queen Elizabeth II designed by Raphael Maklouf. Her Majesty is encircled by inscriptions of the country of origin "AUSTRALIA", the denomination and the portrait's identifier "ELIZABETH II".

The Reverse

The 1989 Proof Gold Nuggets feature Dr Stuart Devlin's design of a hopping Red Kangaroo. Devlin was granted the Royal Warrant of Appointment in 1982, as Goldsmith and Jeweller to Her Majesty the Queen, designing at the Gold Corporation.

He embarked on the change to the more recognized treasure of Australia, the Kangaroo, by depicting the animal in motion. Surrounded by stylized etching, the featured animal is surrounded by inscriptions. Along the rim reads "The Australian Nugget" while under the Kangaroos feet reads "The Red Kangaroo".
